Most Popular Baby Names by US State (2025)

The national top ten hides a lot. A name can lead in one state and sit outside the top twenty in another, and the split usually runs along regional lines rather than state borders. These pages break the 2025 figures out for all fifty states and the District of Columbia so the differences are visible.

Counts come from Social Security card applications, filed by state of birth. Any name with fewer than 5 occurrences in a state and year is withheld, so a name missing from a state list means fewer than 5, never zero.

Frequently asked questions

Why do state rankings differ from the national list?
The national list is the sum of every state, so large states pull it toward their own preferences. A name concentrated in a few populous states can outrank a name that is moderately popular everywhere.
Is this the same data the SSA publishes?
Yes. It is the SSA state-specific file, unchanged in its counts. We rank and group it by census region, and we combine the male and female files when reporting a single figure for a name.
Do I need an account to see a state?
No. Every state page is public and free.
